Common repairs

  • Broken or blocked pipes between the house and the tank, or the tank and the bed, often from roots or settling
  • Baffles that have broken or rotted off, letting solids pass to the bed
  • Pumps and alarms in systems that pump up to a raised bed
  • Effluent filters that are clogged and backing water up into the house
  • Risers and lids, adding risers so lids are at the surface, or replacing cracked and unsafe lids
  • Distribution box problems that send all the flow to one part of the bed

When it's an emergency

Sewage backing up into the house, or pooling on the surface, needs attention right away. Cut water use as much as you can until it's fixed: no laundry, dishwasher or long showers. Keep children and pets away from wet areas in the yard.

Repair or replace?

Many problems are fixable: a pipe, a baffle, a pump. A bed that's saturated with solids or flooded all the time usually isn't. A good company will find the cause first, and tell you honestly whether a repair will hold. Some repairs, like replacing a tank or part of the bed, need a permit too.

Questions

My septic alarm is going off. What do I do?

Cut water use right away. The alarm usually means the pump chamber is too full, often from a failed pump or float. Call a septic company. Most systems have a day or so of reserve.

Why does my yard smell like sewage?

It could be a lid that isn't sealed, a vent, a full tank or effluent reaching the surface over the bed. A septic company can find out which.

Can tree roots damage a septic system?

Yes. Roots get into pipes and beds looking for water. Keep trees, especially willows and maples, well back from the system.

Do septic repairs need a permit?

Some do, like replacing a tank or the leaching bed. Smaller repairs, like a pump, filter or pipe, usually don't. The company will know.
